Cleaning advice for fabric sofas

Removing cat and dog urine from your sofa

Has your cat or dog peed on the sofa? Wiping the fabric is not the same as removing urine from the foam inside. Find out what to do first, which mistakes to avoid and how professional sofa cleaning can help.

What should I do now? ↓

Blotting up liquid is not deep cleaning.

A dry cloth absorbs urine that is still within reach. It does not fully remove urine that has soaked into the foam. Even when the stain disappears, the source of the smell may remain.

My cat or dog has peed on the sofa: what should I do?

  1. Blot up fresh urine.

Gently press a dry, white absorbent cloth onto the wet area. Replace it when wet. Do not rub: the aim is to absorb the liquid you can reach.

  2. Do not pour on water or cleaning products at random.

Check the care instructions first. Not every upholstery fabric tolerates water, and a removable cover is not necessarily machine washable.

  3. Send a photo if you would like a quote.

A photo of your sofa, your town or city and a brief description of the problem are enough for an initial enquiry.

Removing urine odour from a sofa: common mistakes

Wiping with a damp cloth

A damp cloth may remove some surface dirt, but it cannot extract urine from inside the cushion. If the foam is affected, the source of the odour can remain.

Covering cat urine smell with perfume or fragrance spray

A pleasant scent does not prove that the sofa is clean. A fragranced spray may temporarily mask urine odour while the contamination remains in the filling.

Spraying on a urine cleaner and wiping it straight off

A suitable enzymatic cleaner can help break down urine components. It must be safe for the fabric, reach the affected area and have the contact time specified on its label.

A quick surface spray and wipe is therefore not a reliable solution for urine deep inside a cushion. “Enzymatic” does not mean a product is safe for every sofa or sufficient in every case.

Adding more and more water or product

Wetting the cushion again does not show that the contamination is being removed. If the added liquid is not adequately extracted, the filling stays wetter and drying may take longer.

Scrubbing hard or trying several products in succession

Hard rubbing can damage the fabric. Repeatedly applying different products also makes it unclear which residues remain. Do not mix cleaning products. Tell us what you have already used before treatment.

Washing only the sofa cover

The cover can be clean while the foam still smells of urine. Check the washing instructions: a zipped cover is not automatically washable. Washing the cover does not clean the filling.

Using a steam cleaner on urine

A steam cleaner is different from a spray extraction machine that sucks up dirty water. Avoid hot steam on urine spots: heat can make stains and odours harder to remove.

Hiring a sofa cleaning machine: is it really cheaper?

The daily hire price may make cleaning the sofa yourself look economical. But include the products, journeys, time and effort in your comparison.

  1. First, find an available machine.

A machine may not be immediately available at your chosen shop. You need to check availability, reserve if necessary and travel to collect it.

  2. Prepare suitable products and equipment.

The detergent must suit both the machine and your upholstery. If brushing is needed, choose a suitable brush that will not damage the fabric. Products and accessories not included in the hire cost extra.

  3. Carry out the cleaning yourself.

You prepare the machine, measure the detergent, clean the sofa and extract the moisture. An unsuitable product or incorrect technique can cause damage, water marks or excessive wetness. The sofa could end up in a worse condition.

  4. Spend time and effort without a guaranteed result.

For example, you may spend two hours cleaning and still find that urine odour remains in the foam. You have already done the work and paid the costs, and professional help may still be needed.

  5. Clean and return the machine.

The hire terms may require you to clean the equipment and return it by a specified time. That means another trip and more of your time.

Compare the full cost:

Machine hire + cleaning products + any extra equipment + transport + your time collecting, cleaning and returning it.

Keep this in mind when considering a professional sofa cleaning quote. With our service at your home, we bring the machine and suitable equipment and carry out the cleaning. You do not have to find a machine, choose products, do the cleaning or return the equipment.

When urine has reached the foam, simply having a machine is not enough. Choosing and applying an appropriate treatment matters too. We cannot guarantee complete odour removal in advance for deep or repeated urine contamination. In our experience, however, we achieve a good result in most cases. A professional treatment suited to your sofa is then the sensible next step instead of repeatedly wiping the surface.

How can professional sofa cleaning help with cat or dog urine?

Unlike wiping the fabric, spray extraction draws loosened contamination back out with the cleaning liquid. The upholstery and sofa construction must be suitable for this treatment.

Professional spray extraction cleaning of a sofa

Apply clean water and extract dirty water

Cleaning liquid is applied to the upholstery. Dissolved or loosened dirt is extracted with the water through the suction head and collected in a separate dirty-water tank. This involves more than wetting the sofa and leaving it to dry.

Can urine odour disappear completely?

We cannot promise this in advance for every sofa. The depth of contamination, repeated accidents, the fabric, filling and previous treatments affect the result. Severe contamination may require the filling to be assessed if cleaning is insufficient.

A photo helps us see the sofa and visible condition, but cannot show how deeply urine has penetrated. Please mention urine before your appointment. Learn more about our professional sofa cleaning at your home.

Why does a cat or dog pee on the sofa?

Why is my cat peeing on the sofa?

A dirty or hard-to-reach litter tray, stress, marking or a preference for soft surfaces may play a part. Pain and urinary problems are also possible causes. Ask your vet to assess new or recurring behaviour.

Why is my dog peeing on the sofa?

A puppy may not yet be house-trained. Too few toilet breaks, excitement or marking can also contribute. Consult your vet about sudden accidents in a previously house-trained dog or urine leakage while resting.

A cat straining to pass little or no urine needs immediate veterinary attention.

Cleaning does not automatically resolve the cause of the behaviour. Keep litter trays clean and accessible, give dogs enough opportunities to go outside and discuss recurring problems with your vet.

Frequently asked questions about sofa urine stains and odours

There is a smell but no visible stain. Can the sofa still be contaminated?

Yes. Contamination can be present in the fabric or filling without a visible stain. A clean-looking surface does not prove that the inside is clean.

Can you clean only the affected cushion?

That depends on the sofa and how far the contamination has spread. The visible spot may not show the full affected area. Local cleaning can also leave a visible difference compared with the rest of the upholstery.

Should I tell you which products I have used?

Yes. Share the product name or a photo of the packaging and explain how you applied it. This helps us assess the next treatment.

How long will the sofa take to dry?

Allow approximately 24 hours in most cases. Fabric, moisture, room temperature and ventilation can extend this. Do not use the sofa until it is fully dry.

Do you clean outside Ghent?

Yes, we offer sofa cleaning at your home throughout Belgium. Tell us your town or city when requesting a quote.
